KU Leuven, Belgium
Tatjana N. Parac-Vogt is a full Professor and the Head of the Laboratory of Bioinorganic Chemistry at KU Leuven. Before coming to Leuven, she was an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow with Prof. Christian Griesinger (Max-Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry) and a post-doctoral fellow at the University of California, Berkeley, where she worked in the field of supramolecular chemistry with Prof. Kenneth N. Raymond.
Tatjana obtained her PhD in Chemistry from Iowa State University (Ames, U.S.A) where she developed palladium and platinum complexes that functioned as artificial metallopeptidases. For this Ph.D. work, she received several awards, including a Dow Chemical Fellowship, the Iowa State University Research Excellence Award and the International Precious Metals Institute Award, given for outstanding research in the field of precious metals.
Tatjana is originally from Belgrade (former Yugoslavia), where she gained her Diploma in Chemistry from the University of Belgrade with the highest distinction. For her studies, she received the annual award for the best academic record from the Serbian Chemical Society, the ICN Pharmaceutical Company Award for Outstanding Diploma Work, and was also awarded a Fellowship from The German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).
Tatjana is the recipient of IUPAC 2023 Distinguished Women in Chemistry/Chemical Engineering award. She is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and has been elected as a Chemistry Europe Fellow (Class 2020/2021), the highest award given by an association of European chemical societies. Tatjana is a member of AcademiaNet, a global portal of outstanding female scientists and is the founder of AcademiaNet Club Flanders. She is currently the Vice-President of the European Rare-Earth and Actinide Society. Tatjana serves on the Editorial Board of Chemical Society Reviews, the flagship review journal of the Royal Society of Chemistry, and is a member of the Advisory Board of Inorganic Chemistry, published by the American Chemical Society. She is also a member of the Editorial Board of Inorganics, an open access journal that covers all aspects of inorganic chemistry research, and “Chimie Nouvelle”, the magazine of the Société royale de Chimie.
From 2012-2016, Tatjana was the President of BeWiSe, Belgian Women in Science Association, a non-profit organisation that supports the role and position of women in science, and is currently a member of the steering committee. She was the chair of the Diversity Council at KU Leuven from 2017-2022, and has an active interest in promoting gender and cultural diversity in the working environment. She is also a dedicated coach and mentor to younger female scientists, both in the framework of BeWiSe and within KU Leuven.
